Before you trade a track record for a launch.
The SIG P385-FULL arrives with a new fire-control unit and a visible Trigger Block. Against five alternatives, the question is not whether it looks competitive on paper. It is what has been proven after production begins.
Variant-locked comparison. Prices are MSRP unless noted. Review date: 15 Oct 2026.
The short version
The P385 corrects the P320’s most visible trigger-safety distinction, but the FULL model’s dimensions and model-specific price remain unpublished—and its field record has not started.
Six full-size duty pistols, compared in the same class.
The Walther PDP Full Size 4.5 keeps this field focused on service-size duty pistols. Platform-wide adoption is labeled separately from use of the exact commercial variant.
What is known—and what is not.
Dimensions are manufacturer- or retailer-published values for the named variants. “Not published” is intentional.

The trigger is where the designs separate.
All six use internal safety mechanisms. Their visible and redundant trigger-path safeguards differ substantially.
P385-FULL
StrikerFlat trigger with SIG’s flush-faced passive Trigger Block. SIG calls it a “redundant drop safety.” Optional manual thumb safety across the lineup.
P320
StrikerStandard curved trigger with no tab or blade safety. Internal striker and disconnect safeties. Manual safety only on select SKUs.
Glock 17 Gen 5
Safe ActionTrigger-safety tab plus automatic firing-pin and drop safeties. No manual safety.
M&P 2.0
StrikerHinged, two-piece articulated trigger safety; newer production uses a flat-face trigger. Manual-safety and no-safety SKUs exist.
Echelon 4.5F
StrikerTabbed trigger safety, firing-pin block and dual sear engagement points. The secondary sear catches the striker if the primary releases prematurely.
Walther PDP
StrikerPerformance Duty Trigger with a trigger-safety blade, firing-pin safety and disconnector/drop safety. Walther also lists a loaded-chamber indicator and magazine safety. No manual thumb safety.
A platform name is not the same as a generation’s record.
The Glock 17 lineage is old, and Gen 5 has been in service since 2017. The Walther PDP dates to 2021; the P385 has not yet started a production record. The comparison keeps those distinctions visible.
SIG P320
Adopted as the U.S. Army M17/M18. Documented record: a 2017 voluntary upgrade addressing drop-fire; a 2024 federal jury’s $2.3 million negligence verdict, disputed and appealed; ongoing uncommanded-discharge litigation; SIG says more than 20 cases have been dismissed. NHPR reported military M17/M18 incident files spanning 2020–2023.
S&W M&P 2.0
Established duty pistol with wide U.S. law-enforcement adoption and a generally solid service reputation. The reviewed research found no single defining defect episode comparable to the P320’s.
Springfield Echelon
Generally positive press reception since launch, but not yet a long institutional record comparable to Glock or M&P.
Glock 17 Gen 5
Introduced on August 30, 2017, with more than 20 design changes and roots in the FBI’s “M” pistol request. The exact G17 Gen 5 has documented agency service, although Glock does not publish an agency count for it.
Walther PDP
About five and a half years of production through this review. Police1 reported 800-plus rounds without cleaning or re-lubrication in one duty evaluation, and Hawaii DLE selected the platform after a broader 14,200-round test program. Published endurance reports remain platform-wide, not a durability record for exact SKU 2842475; reviewed sources also note lubrication needs and isolated early-production issues.
SIG P385
Introduced at SIG NEXT on September 22, 2026, with retail expected in fall or early winter. No production track record yet.
What a cautious buyer can conclude today.
These are judgments drawn from the sourced record above, not manufacturer claims.
The P385’s safety story is still a claim.
The Trigger Block is a visible design departure from the P320. Whether the full system performs safely and durably at scale is a question only production use can answer.
BASIS: NEW PLATFORM · NO FIELD RECORDThe established choices hold the evidence advantage.
M&P 2.0 and Glock 17 Gen 5 combine established generations with conventional trigger-safety patterns. Published institutional counts are incomplete, but both have documented duty adoption.
BASIS: INTRODUCTION DATES · DOCUMENTED ADOPTIONThe Echelon makes redundancy explicit.
Its tabbed trigger, firing-pin block and secondary sear create the clearest published multi-layer striker-safety description in this set.
BASIS: PUBLISHED MECHANISMThe Walther PDP is the more direct duty comparison.
Its full-size dimensions, conventional trigger-safety blade, standard optic-ready cut and documented platform adoption make it a closer like-for-like alternative than a compact premium outlier.
